GUWAHATI, Nov 17 - Non-availability of a technically advanced surveillance system in Guwahati is proving to be a major challenge for the police in its attempt to trap the gang of snatchers which has been creating terror since the past few days.
According to a source in the city police, though the pattern of the crime is not new, the gang is one step ahead of the police due to lack of technically advanced surveillance support.
�Though Guwahati is a metro city, still we do not have adequate numbers of closed-circuit television cameras at all strategic locations. To control such crimes, we need CCTV cameras almost everywhere. The gang has its camp outside the city and after committing the crime, they easily flee the city area. Moreover, their main targets are elderly men and women,� the source said.
According to a senior official from the city police, the gang is very well-trained and their exact location has not been traced so far.
�The gang members have gone through a painstaking training programme so that they can easily overcome any situation, including police interrogation. So, it is a very challenging task for the police to get information from an arrested member of the gang,� the official said.
He added that around three training camps have been run outside Assam by a well-organised group of criminals to train such snatchers.
Recently, a total of four snatching incidents took place in different parts of the city.
