Elephants kill 5 along Bhutan border

KALAIGAON, May 29 � In four separate incidents within 48 hours, 5 people have been killed by wild elephants in four places in Udalguri and Baksa districts.

In the first incident, one Marshall Daimari (40), a small tea grower of Dimakuchi, was killed at Tarkhuti village by an elephant while chasing away a wild herd of elephants at 12.30 am on May 28.

In the second incident, one Babulal Gaur (38) of No. 2 Sonajuli was killed by the same elephant at 4.30 pm at the same place on May 28. In the third incident, one Josinta Karmakar (35) and her daughter Shilla Karmakar (10) were trampled to death by wild elephants at NC Kherkheria village at 3.30 am on May 29.

In the fourth incident, another person was killed by wild elephants near the western boundary of Bornadi Wildlife Sanctuary in Baksa district last night.
