GUWAHATI, Nov 20 - Kaziranga Wildlife Society (KWS), the oldest conservation NGO of the North East, today felicitated �Elephant Queen� Parbati Barua at a function held at the Pensioners� Bhawan, Chandmari.
The acclaimed conservationist in her brief speech exhorted all to work together for conservation, especially in the matter of creating awareness, taking up conservation initiatives among communities at the grassroots, besides sensitising children and students on protection of flora and fauna.
She added that she is ready to give a helping hand to any initiative aimed at empowering and sensitising grassroots communities on preservation of nature and wildlife.
Earlier, the programme that included the KWS annual general meeting, started with the hoisting of the KWS flag. The general meeting was presided over by Padum Barthakur, president, KWS. The introduction and welcome address were given by Mubina Akhtar, secretary, KWS.
Jayanta Kumar Das, wildlife activist, gave an account of some conservation initiatives including awareness programmes among children and villagers in backward areas in Udalguri district along the Indo-Bhutan border.
The meeting, among other things, resolved to provide KWS�s free institutional life membership for vernacular medium schools near the Kaziranga National Park in a bid to sensitise children and students.
Conservationist Raghunath Choudhury released the KWS mouthpiece Rhino, edited by Kaliprasad Burhagohain. The annual report was also submitted on the occasion.
