Elephant Day observed at Kaziranga National Park

KAZIRANGA, Oct 4 - Kaziranga National Park (KNP) on Thursday observed Elephant Day at Mihimukh under the central range of the world-famed abode of the one-horned rhinoceros.

The Elephant Day programme was organised by The Corbett Foundation in association with Kaziranga National Park-cum-Tiger Reserve authority.

Director of Kaziranga National Park P Shivakumar said that the basic objective of this event was to involve all sections of people, including the villagers to create awareness and adopt measures for the protection of elephants and their habitats.

He said that it was important to motivate the students� community to create awareness for the conservation of the elephant species. He also appreciated the interest shown by the students during the deliberations on elephants by the experts.

The event which was enthusiastically attended by the students were given a presentation about the morphological and structural features of elephants by Rabin Sharma, Research Officer of Kaziranga National Park.

Dr Naveen Pandey, Deputy Director of The Corbett Foundation said that all the stakeholders of elephant conservation, including local communities, teachers and students need to have a discussion to address the issue of human-elephant conflict.

Later, a painting and open quiz competition were held where students from various schools participated.
