BISWANATH CHARIALI, March 8 - With the announcement of dates for the Assembly elections in the State, the election fever has gripped the society, including political parties as well as the common people, in Biswanath district.

A good number of party ticket aspirants have already tried their level best to woo the voters by installing colourful posters, banners, flexes at different places like Biswanath Chariali, Chatiya, Behali, Borgang, Gohpur, Bedeti, Kalabari etc., in Biswanath district.

The posters illustrate beautifully crafted words of promise and assurance with the photographs of the aspiring candidates. It may be mentioned here that the newly- created district of Biswanath comprises Biswanath LAC, Behali LAC, Gohpur LAC and a part of Chatiya LAC.

Biswanath and Chatiya LAC seats were won by AGPs Prabin Hazarika and Padma Hazarika, respectively, while Behali and Gohpur LAC seats were won by Congresss Pallav Lochan Das and Manika Borah in the last Assembly elections. However, all the seats were left to BJP candidates by AGP-BJP alliance this time. The poll pact has also resulted in much protest among the party workers of AGP in all the constituencies. Protest rallies, sit-in demonstrations and meetings are being carried out by them.

Meanwhile, BJP is likely to give party tickets to Padma Hazarika who has recently joined the saffron brigade at Chatiya and former MLA and State BJP president Ranjit Dutta at Behali, but the party is yet to take a decision on Biswanath and Gohpur seats.

On the other hand, six Congressmen have applied for party tickets in Biswanath. They include former minister Noorjamal Sarker, Asam Pradesh Congress Committee secretary Dilip Kumar Baruah, Tea tribe leader Ram Prasad Bag, former Biswanath Zila Parishad member Deepak Das, Sewa Dal activist Kamal Saikia and APCCs Media Cell member Sanju Baruah.

The party has big ticket aspirants namely former minister Ripun Borah in Gohpur, Premlal Ganju and Rupak Sharma in Behali and Partha Pratim Borah in Chatiya. Against this, Pramod Borthakur, Dr Ranjan Gogoi and Pankaj Borah have sought party tickets from the BJP in Biswanath, while Utpal Borah, Gopal Saikia etc., have sought party tickets in Gohpur.
