Elaborate plans to celebrate Road Safety Week

GUWAHATI, Jan 8 - Along with the rest of the country, preparations are also afoot to celebrate the 27th Road Safety Week in the city and other parts of Assam.

The Transport department has made elaborate plans to mark the occasion, from January 10 to January 16, with various activities, including public awareness events and competitions among students.

In the city, the Transport department, along with the Kamrup Metro district administration, the District Transport Office (DTO) and Regional Transport Authority (RTA), Traffic Police, District Road Safety Committee, NGOs and other departments will hold a number of programmes.

The motto of the Road Safety Week this time is �Road Safety: Time for Action�.

In the city, the week-long event will start with the hoisting of flag at the Kamrup Metro DTO at 8:30 am on January 10.

It will be followed by formal lighting of the lamp by Chief Secretary VK Pipersenia at the Shraddhanjali Kanan, in presence of senior officials including Kamrup Metro Deputy Commissioner Dr M Angamuthu.

A drawing competition and slogan writing competition will be held for students at the place. The winners of the competitions will be handed over awards during the concluding ceremony on January 16.

During the course of the week, various activities including processions, car rallies, street plays, health check-up camps, drivers� training camps, among others, will be held to bring awareness on the issue of road safety. The main target of the campaign will be the youth and student segments.

The concluding ceremony on January 16 will be held at the ISBT. It will be attended by the Chief Minister, Transport Minister, Education Minister and senior officials.
