GUWAHATI, Oct 21 - Strongly condemning the burning of effigies of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal by certain organisations and people in the State, senior journalist DN Chakravartty today described these actions as contrary to the basic culture of India.
Chakravartty said that in India where bodies of the dead are cremated with utmost respect, it was disgusting that people go to the extent of burning effigies of living people only to fulfill their narrow political or sectional agenda. He appealed to the people as well as lawmakers and the judiciary to frame laws where burning of effigies would be treated as a serious offence.
He also appealed to the people to discourage the practice of blocking of roads in the name of protests or to raise a demand. Such bandhs not only create difficulties for patients, examinees and office-goers but also hinders economic activities, especially the work of daily-wage earners.
