Eel farming project inaugurated

GOALPARA, Aug 27 � An innovative eel farming project, which has been sanctioned to the Meher Composite Framing Society of Goalpara under the Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana, was inaugurated at Meher Farm, Phetkai under Kharmuza Block recently.

Inaugurating the project, chief guest Haren Das, District Fishery Officer, said that this project is one of its kind in the district and, if pursued in right earnest, it would bring immense benefits to the local people in terms of providing employment, food and additional income. Rajen Baruah, District Development Manager, urged all the local youths and the SHG members to take well-coordinated efforts crucial for increasing production of the eel species to reap economic benefits as it has a great demand and acceptablity in markets all over the State.

He also pointed out the need for establishment of hatcheries in an organised manner for the smooth functioning of the project. Another speaker, Ajit Kumar Choudhury, LDM, said that banks continue to encourage unemployed youths and SHG members in undertaking such income-generating economic activities by extending credit without any collateral security. Among others who spoke on the ocasion were the manager of the Assam Gramin Vikas Bank, Goalpara and some eminent persons of the locality.
