By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Aug 20 - The Vice Chancellor of Gauhati University, Dr. Mridul Hazarika on Friday said that he intends to put Gauhati University on the global map in the coming days.

He said this at an Editors Meet that was held at Gauhati University as part of the Pre-Golden Jubilee celebration of Media Education in North East India.

Around 15 editors and senior journalists from leading media houses assembled at the university campus to discuss the roadmap of media education in the region and the future prospects for improvement of media courses and bridging the gap between the professional and academic field.

We have already introduced the Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) in the university departments which would give students the liberty to venture out to other departments for specialized courses, and the university has strengthened its infrastructure to meet the changing needs, Dr. Hazarika said. He also announced that a national lecture by a renowned journalist of the country would be organized every year. The university would also confer a best journalist award annually to encourage quality journalism in the Northeast.

Executive Editor of The Assam Tribune PJ Baruah said that the Department of Mass Communication and Journalism in Gauhati University should upgrade itself since it enjoys the advantage of being located in Guwahati which is the gateway to the Northeast and should also integrate itself with other language departments to improve the journalistic language of the students.

Senior journalist Mrinal Talukdar spoke about the employment problems prevailing in journalism as most of the students of the field were not very skilled.

The session was also attended by Naresh Kalita (Niyomiya Barta), Rajib Lochan Borthakur (DDK), Manas Pratim Sarma (AIR), Sushanta Talukdar (Nezine), Dr. Sanjoy Paul (News 18), Hiren Saikia, Amal Kalita and Pranab Acharya (Asomiya Pratidin), Dinkar Kumar and Raman Bora (The Sentinel), Biswajit Das and Bhabesh Kalita (Asomiya Khobor) and Jayanta Kalita (Amar Asom). The need for a journalist to have hold in different languages, practical knowledge, internships of students outside the State, introduction of a public relations cell and upgrading of the course structure every two years were among some suggestions given by the invited guests.

The formal session was attended by Dr. Suresh Kumar Nath, Registrar of GU, among others.
