ED may register case against ex-DIG Dutta

By STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI, Sept 26 - The Enforcement Directorate (ED) is likely to register a case against former Assam Police DIG PK Dutta for allegedly accumulating properties disproportionate to his known sources of income. Sources said that prima facie there appears to be a clear case of amassing properties through illegal means which could result in ED attaching his properties as well. It has also been learnt that the Assam Police headquarters here has already directed both Cachar and Dibrugarh police to enlist details of both moveable and immoveable properties of Dutta.

The former cop is on the run after his name surfaced in the Assam Police SI (Unarmed Branch) recruitment examination question paper leak scam.

Police had last night arrested one Jaydev Barua from Tinsukia. Barua is believed to be a close aide of Dutta. Meanwhile, after CID and the crime branch of Guwahati police, the vigilance and anti-corruption branch too will register a suo motu case in connection with the irregularities.

Significantly, Kuldip Rajbongshi, who was arrested in connection with the case by Nalbari police recently, while being taken out of the police station today claimed that he has been framed. He said that a number of high profile persons are linked with the entire scam.

Sources said the crime branch of Guwahati police will take him in custody soon for questioning.

On the other hand, a section of invigilators of the SI recruitment examination confided before this newspaper that they were intimated about the cancellation of the examination on the previous day itself, contrary to what the Assam Police top brass is claiming that they came to know about the paper leak on the day of examination.

Despite repeated attempts made by this correspondent, State Level Police Recruitment Board chairman Pradip Kumar could not be reached.

Meanwhile, KMSS leader Akhil Gogoi today demanded a CBI enquiry into the scam and demanded resignation of Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, who is also holding the home department portfolio.
