Economic blockade begins in Manipur

IMPHAL, May 12 � Manipur is reeling under another round of seven-day economic blockade on its highways from midnight last resulting in fuel outlets shutting down in Imphal on Tuesday.

The blockade, from May 11 midnight to May 18 midnight, was imposed by Kuki Students� Organisation (KSO) Sadar Hills demanding arrest of persons involved in the attempt on the life of a van (taxi) driver at Moidangpok arising out of a recent land dispute.

The students� body also demanded termination of the police personnel along with their commander for allegedly asking the van driver to leave Lalhoiphai village, besides seeking compensation for medical expenses and damaged van.

There is no report of any unwanted incident on the first day of the blockade. Reports said there was heavy vehicular traffic along the highway last night prior to the blockade.
