Eco-clubs discuss ways to boost Nat�l Green Corps prog

GUWAHATI, March 3 � Aaranyak, CEE North-East, Institution of Engineers, Assam State Centre, and Regional Centre of Expertise, Guwahati Centre, jointly organised a district-level programme for the eco-clubs of Kamrup (Metro) district recently. The programme was held on Pragjyotish School, Boragaon premises. Eco-clubs affiliated to the National Green Corps of Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF), were invited to the programme.

The main objective of this programme was to give the eco-clubs a platform to share their experiences at the district level and identify common issues for working together in the future as part of strengthening the National Green Corps Programme in the district.

The programme started with the welcome address by Mrintunjoy Sukla, Principal of Pragjyotish School. Dr Bibhab Kumar Talukdar, secretary general, Aaranyak spoke about the degraded forests and threatened wildlife of North-east India, while Firoz Ahmed, wildlife researcher of Aaranyak, discussed about the issues related to the protection of Deepor Beel.

With reference to some success stories, Memma Sinha, project officer of CEE North-East discussed about the techniques used to make environment education interesting and fruitful at the school level.

Dr Archana Goswami, senior lecturer, Department of Chemistry, Cotton College provided important tips to maintain an eco-friendly lifestyle. She asked the school community to visit Cotton College for technical guidance, when necessary regarding the various environment study projects.

Attending the programme, GK Khaound, chairman, Institutions of Engineers , India, Assam State Centre, said that instead of keeping its activities among the members only, IE(I) has decided to spread its activities to different groups of society for the greater interest of the State.

During the open session, the students and teachers discussed about their ongoing eco-club activities. They shared their experiences and views. The open session was conducted by Simanta Kalita, officer-in-charge, CEE North-East.

It may be mentioned that the National Green Corps programme is a nationwide programme conceptualized and supported by MoEF, Govt. of India for making the young minds eco-sensitive. At present a total 68 schools are recognised in the district of Kamrup (Metro). Aaranyak is the district coordinating agency for Kamrup (M) District, Assam Science Technology and Environment Council (ASTEC) is the nodal agency for the State of Assam and CEE North-East is the State Resource Agency.
