EC steps up drive for fair polls in State

GUWAHATI, March 27 - With a view to ensuring a free and fair poll, the Election Commission has initiated action against all �possible intimidators� identified from different parts of the State, besides recovering a total of 128 illegal arms.

Talking to this reporter, Nitin Khare, Additional Electoral Officer also informed that so far cash worth Rs 5.58 crore (approx) has been seized, which excludes the recovery made by the Income Tax department.

The number of illegal ammunition that was seized till date stood at 432. In addition to it, 26,217 numbers of licensed arms have so far been deposited.

�Further, a total of 3,946 non-bailable warrants have been executed till date. Also more than 6.26 lakh litres of illegal liquor including the Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IFL) has been seized,� Khare said.

Khare further informed that as a preventive step, 4726 persons were released on the strength of interim bonds and 646 on execution of final bonds promising good behavior.

Meanwhile, Police sources stated that the Superintendents of Police of the districts are assisting the teams of Election Commission which are keeping a close tab on illegal cash flow ahead of the polls.

�Model Code of Conduct teams are on the job in different parts of the State and are assisted by the police especially when it comes to intelligence sharing. Besides, the static surveillance teams, flying squads and the strategically-located check-posts are working in tandem with the Police to ensure conduct of free and fair election,� Police sources added.
