EC officials search Rakibuls house, vehicles

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, March 16 - A team of Election Commission officials today conducted a search in the house and the convoy of vehicles of State Agriculture Minister Rakibul Hussain.

Hussain was going out of his Panjabari residence in a convoy of vehicles along with his family members, when his and other vehicles in the convoy were searched by the EC officials. They also searched his house thereafter.

However, the findings of the search operations have not yet been revealed by the authorities. Efforts to contact the District Election Officer and the Election Commission Expenditure Observer failed to elicit any response.

Later, speaking to reporters at Rajiv Bhavan, Hussain said a team of officials, some in uniform and others in civilian dress, surrounded his vehicle while he was leaving his private residence located at Panjabari.

They (officials) refused to identify themselves and had no photographer or videographer with them They checked my vehicle and also the vehicles of my escorts. Then the officer leading them said he is satisfied and I am free to leave, Hussain said.

He added that the official heading the team was Raghavendra Singh, Expenditure Observer of Election Commission.

I sought a written statement from him but he did not give me one. They also did not give any reason for carrying out the search, Hussain said, adding that he fully cooperated with the team.

He said that the action was part of a political conspiracy to terrorise the Congressmen.

The Minister added that he will seek legal opinion and file an FIR on the issue. Hussain also demanded an inquiry into the incident.

It is a question of my hard-earned reputation, he said.
