E-challan system for traffic rule violators in city soon

By SANJOY RAY

GUWAHATI, Oct 8 - The paperwork related to issuing fine to traffic rule violators could soon be a thing of past with the Guwahati Police (Traffic) expected to switch over to e-challan system by the end of this year.

The idea behind the introduction of e-challan is to ensure transparency and make the exercise hassle-free. Also, the system will facilitate the tracking of repeated offenders.

Sources informed that through e-challans, the violators of traffic rules would be able to pay the requisite amount of fine online.

After the recent Motor Vehicle (Amendment) Act, the Transport department is gearing up to introduce the provisions of e-challan in Guwahati, a first of its kind initiative in the State. Further, one will also be able to check the status of the e-challan online, official sources said.

The Transport department, according to sources, is likely to give a go-ahead to the new system by the end of this year. From driving without wearing a helmet or seatbelt to jumping traffic light, e-challan will bring all kinds of traffic rules violators under its ambit.

To begin with, the system will be introduced in Guwahati. Later, we plan to replicate the same in all the major towns of the State, sources said.

Sources also stated that special initiatives would be taken to make the police officials understand the know-how of the system.

Once introduced, it will reduce the workload of the traffic police in a big way. This will also mean less argument on the road, sources added.
