Dysfunctional street lights on new bridge

By CORRESPONDENT

JALUKBARI, June 28 - Most of the street lights on the newly inaugurated Saraighat Bridge on the Brahmaputra in the city havent been working for the past several days. Pedestrians struggle to walk on the bridge at night due to non-availability of light.

Several street lights have been rendered useless as their components were found missing. These faulty light posts also increase the chances of electrocution and are not at all safe for the passersby, especially after dark.

Talking to this correspondent, some of the pedestrians said anti-social elements may take advantage of the dark and resort to illegal activities on the bridge, which poses a threat to people who use the bridge regularly.

Local people further said police patrolling teams should do their duty properly so that such types of theft do not take place in future.

Meanwhile, the Gammon authorities have lodged an FIR at the Jalukbari Police Outpost on the theft of light post components. Sources said Gammon will soon restore the missing parts of the light posts on the bridge.
