By CORRESPONDENT

DOOMDOOMA, Oct 7 - With great enthusiasm and religious fervour, the five-day-long Durga Puja festival began on Friday evening at tea town Doomdooma with the invocation of goddess Durga under bel trees known as bel bodhan. Several puja committees brought out religious processions after bel bodhan in the town. The light shower that rained on Friday evening at Doomdooma failed to affect the puja enthusiasm and fervour among the people.

On Saturday morning, devotees thronged the puja pandals in large numbers to offer Mahasaptami Puja.

This time 53 Durga Pujas are being performed in community puja pandals in different places under Doomdooma Police Station. On the other hand, under Dholla PS 10 , under Phillobari PS 12 and under Baghjan PS, four Durga Pujas have been organised. Moreover, four Durga Pujas have been organised under Kakopothar PS.

Among the community puja pandals in Doomdooma town, the Durga Puja of Doomdooma Asomiya Puja Aru Natya Mandir Samity which began in 1904 is the oldest Durga Puja in this region. This time, the puja committee has decided to go plastic free in their 116th Durga Puja celebration. The committee has also organised various devotional cultural competitions during the puja days. The secretary of the puja committee, Arupjyoty Deka informed this correspondent that the committee had invited a Kamrupia Dhuliya party to perform during the puja days. It can be mentioned here that a large number of devotees throng this Puja pandal.

On the other hand , the puja pandal of Doomdooma Marwari Durga Puja Committee at Doomdooma Town Field pulls a large crowd every year for its decorative pandal. This time too it will be large crowd puller as a very beautifully designed pandal is made using thermocol and paper.

This time, the puja pandal of Doomdooma Bangiya Durgabari is also nicely decorated and it is expected that it will also be able to pull a huge crowd.

The local civil and police administration have also geared up to maintain law and order in the circle during the puja days. Doomdooma MLA Durga Bhumij and the chairman of Doomdooma Municipal Board Dulu Arandhara have greeted the people on the occasion of Durga Puja festival and urged all to celebrate the festival peacefully. They also urged the masses to maintain cleanliness and to avoid the use of plastic.
