Durga Puja celebrated in Meghalaya

SHILLONG, Oct 8 - After four days of festivities, the Durga Puja celebrations came to a close today with Bijoya Dashami with idols of Goddess Durga immersed at the Wahumkhrah, Polo with fanfare.

In the morning, women and men dressed in traditional outfits and Jewellery visited the pandals and offered sweets and vermillion to the Goddess.

Traditionally, text books and other school-college materials are also taken by the students and touched the feet of the deities to seek their blessings.

On the occasion people also greeted each other by hugging and wished each other a peaceful and prosperous year ahead and later in the evening visited each other�s households with sweets.

During the day, the idols from the different pandals were carried on trucks and proceeded towards the Wahumkhrah. The serpentine processions of different Puja committees from the State capital witnessed hundreds of people dancing and singing to the drum beats.

Volunteers from the central Puja committees guided these trucks and the people through the streets together with the traffic police.

There were 66 puja committees this year in the State capital and all immersed their respective idols at Wahumkhrah.
