Durga Puja, a 404-yr-old tradition for Bagribari Mahamayadham Temple

GAURIPUR, Oct 13 - The 404-year-old Durga Puja held on the premises of Bagribari Mahamayadham Temple situated in the Parbatjhoar Subdivision under the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) is scheduled to be held from October 22 to 26 next by maintaining the guidelines issued by the government for the COVID-19 pandemic and by observing only the traditional rituals.

Besides Durga Puja, Chandi Puja, Sandhi Puja, Maroi Puja and Padma Puja will also be held. A large number of goats and buffalos will be sacrificed on the occasion. Every day, a limited number of devotees will assemble in front of the temple and offer prayers.

According to legends, Hatibar Chaudhury, the zamindar of the erstwhile Bagribari Zamindary Estate, started puja on the temple premises 404 years ago and since then the management committee of the temple has been performing Durga Puja without break.

On the Navami day, a large number of goats and buffalos are expected to be sacrificed. As per tradition, the Goddess of Durga here will not be immersed.

Several invited troupes are scheduled to sing songs based on the stories of Padma Puran. This year, the number of devotees will be limited and mass gathering will not be permitted, informed Pradip Bhattacharjya, the secretary of the temple committee.
