Dump all mega dam projects, says AASU

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Oct 9 The All Assam Students Union (AASU) today reiterated its demand that Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh should immediately go for a decision to dump all the mega dam projects, including the Lower Subansiri Hydroelectric Power Project (LSHEP) located or proposed in the Himalaya foothills, going by the recommendations of the expert group. The Himalaya foothills is a highly vulnerable seismic zone, said the students body in a statement.

It has also condemned the failure of Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi to play a bold role on the mega dam issue as shameful.

The statement of the students' body came in the wake of media reports that Union Minister for Environment and Forests has sent a letter to the Prime Minister after consulting the experts, civil society organisations and leading individuals in the city on September 16 last. The Union Minister has reportedly suggested in his letter that the mega dam projects of the NE region should be abandoned.
