DU students to attend classes

By Staff Correspondent

DIBRUGARH, Aug 30 The agitating students of Dibrugarh University (DU) today called off the strike and also the class boycott after feeling the pinch of continuous loss of classes. The students have decided to attend classes from tomorrow to bring back the academic environment in the university.

Dibrugarh University Post Graduate Students Union general secretary Arindam Buragohain told media persons today that the students community was feeling the loss of classes due to the continuing agitation. He, however, reiterated that students would attend classes with black badges and hoist black flags in each of the departments and hostels of the university till the dismissal of Dr Kandarpa Kumar Deka as the Vice Chancellor. The student community is deeply hurt by the behaviour of the Vice Chancellor in the whole process of responding to our legitimate demands, the student leader said and added that the students cannot accept him as the Vice Chancellor anymore. If the Vice Chancellor Dr Kandarpa Kumar Deka was capable of settling the fee hike issue sans the meeting of the Executive Council members or the heads of various departments and centres of the university, why did he opt to drag the matter so long and provoke students to launch agitation? Arindam Buragohain questioned.

The students have held Dr Deka responsible for all the chaos in the university and said that he ought to own moral responsibility and resign.

The student leaders also alleged that the Vice Chancellor had illegally dissolved the Post Graduate Students Union body and had destroyed the sanctity of learning by inviting police forces inside the university campus during the peaceful protest by the students.

Asked if the students would open the locked office of the Vice Chancellor, the PGSU general secretary said they would not open the lock. The student leaders have also decided to approach the Chancellor of the University for dismissal of Dr Kandarpa Kumar Deka with their allegations.

Meanwhile, all the general members of the AASU unit of the Dibrugarh University have resigned in protest against the alleged double standards maintained by the central body of the AASU over removal of the Vice Chancellor.
