DU students demand reduction of fees

By Staff Correspondent

DIBRUGARH, May 18 The Dibrugarh University unit of the All Assam Students Union (AASU) today staged a sit-in demonstration in front of the University administrative building to reiterate their demand for slashing the fees in various centres of studies and departments of the varsity.

The students alleged that the fees are not proportionate to the infrastructure facilities provided to them, besides the quality of teaching and the number of qualified faculty.

The students staged the demonstration from 11 am to 1 pm and later submitted a memorandum to the Vice Chancellor, Alak Kumar Buragohain. The students particularly cited the fee structure of the Dibrugarh University Institute of Engineering and Technology, which they said is extremely high and unjust.

It may be recalled that in August 2010, the students had laid siege of the office of the Vice Chancellor over steep hike in the fees of various courses of the University, leading to clamping of prohibitory orders in the campus by the district administration. The students had then gheraoed the Dibrugarh University Executive Council members and had not allowed them to leave the VCs office, till police intervened to bring the situation under control in the following morning.

The student leaders of the AASU unit said that despite apprising the authorities about various problems being faced by the students, corrective steps were yet to be initiated. Through this peaceful demonstration, we want to bring the problems to the notice of the DU authorities, said Udipjyoti Gogoi, an executive member of AASU.

The students asked the varsity authorities to review the implementation of semester system in the university so as to bring rectification for its smooth execution. They further sought state of the art educational facilities in all the centres of studies and departments and to regularly invite reputed corporate and business houses to conduct campus recruitment for students.

Other demands of the students include regularization of jobs of all teachers and non-teaching staff of the centres of studies and departments and conducting of compartmental examinations within 45 days of declaration of results.
