DU stalemate continues

By Staff CORRESPONDENT

DIBRUGARH, Aug 26 The agitation over excess hike of fees of various courses and hostels in Dibrugarh University (DU) continued today as the agitating students of the University hoisted black flags in almost every department and wore black badges despite promulgation of section 144 CrPC within the DU campus. The students also organised funeral procession carrying the effigy of the Vice Chancellor and consigned it to flames inside the administrative block of the University.

Additional district magistrate had promulgated section 144 CrPC in the University campus yesterday, banning assembly of five or more persons within the radius of 500 metres from Vice Chancellors residence to the Administrative block within the Dibrugarh University campus in view of the ongoing agitation by the students.

In spite of the prohibitory orders, the students staged demonstration in front of the VCs office today, asking Dr Kandarpa Kumar Deka to quit as the Vice Chancellor. Dr Kandarpa Kumar Deka who has failed to end the deadlock with the students for almost two months has no moral right to occupy the post of Vice Chancellor, the students in union said. Arindam Borgohain, leader of the post graduate students of the University said that the students can no more accept Dr Kandarpa Kumar Deka as the Vice Chancellor because he has failed to understand the sentiments of the students.

The students had also dared to violate the prohibitory orders in the DU campus by organising a meeting in front of the office of the VC and taking out a procession inside the campus yesterday evening.
