DU faculty member held for obscene act

DIBRUGARH, July 3 - Police arrested Dhruvajyoti Choudhury, assistant professor in the Department of Mathematics at Dibrugarh University (DU), in connection with the Dibrugarh PS Case (No. 1044/2020 u/s 294A/500/506 IPC, r/w Sec 67A of IT Act) pertaining to obscene act, defamation and uploading materials containing sexually explicit act, etc., on a certain porn website.

Superintendent of Police Sreejith T told newsmen here today that the accused, part of the university faculty, confessed to shooting the obscene video of himself along with a woman, which he later uploaded on a certain pornographic website.

�According to the admission of the accused, the video was created some three years ago at a hotel in Guwahati. The accused professor is originally from Pathsala, Barpeta. After the case was registered, we raided the house of the accused. We have seized the laptop, mobile phone of the accused and also the camera used for the shooting. A compact disc has also been recovered. We have arrested the accused assistant professor,� said the SP.

Asked about the unidentified woman involved in the obscene act, the SP stated that the woman is not a student of Dibrugarh University as the accused and the DU authorities have confirmed.

It may be mentioned that the DU authorities issued a show-cause notice to the assistant professor in question after the obscene video went viral.

�We demanded an explanation from the accused on the alleged matter. But as we were not convinced with his reply, we lodged the FIR. An internal enquiry has also been instituted. As per DU guidelines, a decision on the suspension or any other penalty will be taken at the earliest,� Dr Harish Chandra Mahanta, Registrar, Dibrugarh University, told newsmen.
