DU authorities relent, to reduce fee hike

DIBRUGARH, Aug 29 � Giving in to the continuous agitation of the students� community, Dibrugarh University (DU) authorities last night offered to reduce all the increased fees of various courses and of hostel seats and also decided to withdraw the police case against five leaders of the postgraduate students union, besides reinstating the Post Graduate Students� Union (PGSU) body, which it had dissolved earlier. The DU authorities declared its decision to keep the hike of various courses to only 15 per cent.

The DU authorities conveyed their decision through a letter addressed to the leaders of the protesting students and the teachers� body of the University. Nevertheless, the students have stood their ground on the dismissal of the Vice-Chancellor, underlining that they would not give up their agitation till the VC resigned from his post. The students hoisted black flags in the DU campus, wore black badges and staged hunger strike even today.

Meanwhile, the district body of the All Assam Students� Union has welcomed the decision of the university authorities to reduce the hiked fees, reinstate the PGSU body and withdraw the police cases registered against them.
