DTOs office closed over power bill

By Correspondent

TURA, March 12 - The office of the District Transport Officer (DTO) here has remained shut for close to a week allegedly over pending electricity bills of close to Rs 16 lakh. The electricity bills, according to sources have been pending over decades leading to MeECL finally disconnecting the lines last month.

The matter came to light this morning after one resident went to the office for some work and found the office open but empty. He was informed that official work was not being done as there was no electricity in the office.

They only have a small generator which can power just a few lines. The server cannot be started which means that no work can be done, said the resident.

An insider to the Transport department stated that there was hardly any money provided for maintenance by either the State Government or GHADC.

The deputy commissioner of West Garo Hills, Ram Singh, upon being informed on the matter stated that after a talk with the DTO, a generator was being arranged to ensure work would resume from tomorrow.
