Dry fish market

By Correspondent

MORIGAON, Oct 10 - The Dry Fish Market at Jagiroad has been facing a lot of problems, pushing the local small traders towards a bleak future. The biggest dry fish market of Assam, the Jagiroad Dry Fish Market supplies local dry fishes to Meghalaya, Manipur, Tripura and Nagaland besides West Bengal. But of late, exorbitant taxes imposed by the State Tax department on the fish traders has led the local fish traders suffering huge losses.

The neighbouring Meghalaya has no tax on the dry fish business. But due to the whimsical attitude of authorities in Assam, massive taxes were also imposed on the dry fish businessmen from Meghalaya also. Many dry fish businessmen have been forced to leave the business also, sources said.
