Drug racket busted in Jorhat, 2 arrested

JORHAT, April 21: Jorhat police has busted a racket involved in drugs peddling in the town and arrested two persons on charges of their involvement in the crime after nabbing them red-handed with narcotic powder suspected to be brown sugar.

Sub-Inspector (Jorhat Town branch) Satish Sahoo told this newspaper that in a raid carried out by a police team, led by the Officer-in-Charge of the Jorhat Police Station Ranjit Chetia at Fasi Ali locality, Chintu Das, along with Dhananjoy Debnath were found in possession of suspected narcotic powder.

Several tiny packets containing the powder, believed to be brown sugar, were recovered from the house belonging to Debnath, stated Sahoo, who was part of the police team that conducted the drive.

The police officer said that altogether about 10 gms of powder believed to be drugs was found from the house of Debnath, from where the duo, with support from their associates conducted the business of narcotic substances peddling.

He said that the duo, who were arrested under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, were produced in a court which remanded them in judicial custody.

Sahoo said that the sample of the powder recovered from the possession of the arrested persons will be sent to the State Forensic Science Laboratory in Guwahati for testing the substance for confirmation of narcotics as per procedure.

He said that police were looking out for other people who assisted the duo in running the drugs racket.

It may be mentioned here that on March 17, a Jorhat Police team seized a large amount of narcotic substances along with Indian and foreign-made liquor bottles from the house of a person at Harijan Colony here.
