Drug mafia now targeting city schools, colleges

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Oct 12 - Parents beware, the school or college your child is enrolled in may now fall in the target list of Guwahatis ever flourishing drug cartel.

Assam Polices narcotics cell believes that the inter-state drug peddling racket has its eyes on top educational institutions in Guwahati, something that is fast increasing the vulnerability of the younger generation, especially teenagers.

We have inputs that drug peddlers are targeting schools and colleges in an extensive manner, although it would be too early for us to go into specifics at the moment. But yes, this is something we are taking up very seriously, a source in Assam Police said.

From ganja and cocaine to heroin, all kinds of substances are being pumped in by the drug mafia targeting the younger lot. Those working in the field of de-addiction and rehabilitation would tell you that the number of college students getting addicted to toxic substances has increased a lot in the recent times, the source said.

Sources said Guwahati Police has identified some drug peddling hotspots in and around the city and some of them are in prime locations.

We are keeping a close eye on the entire development. We cannot let educational institutes turn into safe havens for drug peddlers, the source stated.

From what we have gathered, schools and colleges top the list as far as drug peddling is concerned. In some cases, even students get involved in the illegal trade, the sources said, adding, the drug cartel mostly targets children form financially well-off backgrounds.

Another senior Assam Police official told The Assam Tribune that it would be easier to nip the menace in the bud if police receives support from the institute authorities or the parents. Having said that, we have already prepared an action-plan to weed out the deep-rooted nexus, the official said.
