TEZPUR, May 8 - Tezpur, known for its beauty and culture, has now-a-days become a hub of drug abusers and peddlers. The residents of the town are worried over the alarming use of drugs.

In the last few months, cases of drug abuse and arrest of a number of youths involved in drug abuse has evoked serious concern among the conscious section here. Despite repeated complaints from various circles, police has failed to take prompt action. This can be gauged from the statistics.

Police sources said that in the last couple of days, three drug peddlers were arrested. They are Pritam Sarkar, Diki Sarkar and Miku Sarkar.

The arrested persons confessed before the police that besides taking drugs, they have been running the trade in and around Tezpur town over the last few months.

Drugs, especially brown sugar is supplied from Guwahati. Once we receive the consignment in different shapes, we distribute these to the consumers as per demand. Students studying in the colleges here and the youths coming from different places of the State and boarding as paying guests here are our main customers, they claimed.

It needs mention here that the Hindu Jagaran Manch, which has been vocal against the issue has been organising awareness programmes among the people here for creating opinion against drug abuse among the youths and pressurizing the police and the district administration to expedite search operations against drug rackets in Tezpur.
