Drive against two-wheeler riders without helmets

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, July 5 The Kamrup Metro administration has launched a unique scheme to curb the menace of youths not wearing helmets while riding two-wheelers, by issuing an order which will ensure that those who do not wear helmets will not be able to buy petrol.

The administration also prohibited the sale of petrol or diesel in bottles or any kind of container.

District administration sources when asked said, The recent record shows that a large number of fatalities are a result of driving without helmets or inferior quality helmets. We have now decided to launch a drive of no helmet, no petrol in the capital city and have also instructed all the officers-in-charge of the police stations to keep a close vigil on the petrol pumps.

The administration has also discussed the matter with the City Police. The notice says that strict action would be taken against anybody found violating the order.

To publicize the drive, copies of the order have already been pasted on the premises of all the petrol pumps in the city. It needs mention here that with the rise in number of vehicles plying in the capital city, road mishaps have also taken a leap. The administration, sources said, also prohibited the sale of fuel to vehicles without registration number. Besides, it has also asked the petrol pump owners to maintain a record of the vehicles as well.

On the loose sale of fuel, a senior Assam Police official said, In some of the recent instances, it has been found that people use the same fuel in arson and other antisocial activities.

We are taking it seriously and those flouting the norms would be dealt with a firm hand, he added.
