DHUBRI, Jan 18 - Despite stringent laws and tight security arrangements, the sale of illicit liquor is rampant in many parts of Dhubri district. This can be gauged from the fact that the officials of the Excise department have seized a huge quantity of illicit liquor from different parts of the district during the last few days. During the operation, five persons were arrested with 10 litres of liquor. A senior official of the department, who did not wish to be named, informed this correspondent that the officials of the Excise department would launch a vigorous operation in some pockets in which people are selling illicit liquor. �We have seized over 200 litres of illicit liquor during the ongoing operations and we are expecting more seizures in the days to come,� he said and appealed to the people to cooperate with the department.
It has been learnt that a section of people is selling illicit liquor in Chagolia, Sahebganj, Alamganj, Balajan, Gauripur and many areas of the Dhubri town area. What is more interesting is that liquor is not manufactured in Dhubri district, rather it is brought from the neighbouring areas, particularly from BTAD and Meghalaya.
Manas Jyoti Das, Superintendent of Dhubri Excise department while talking to this correspondent, however, said, �The illicit liquor business has been declining due to constant vigil from the authorities concerned. During the last few days we have made substantial seizures from various parts of the district that indicate that our operations have yielded the desired results.�
Some local NGOs also appealed to the Excise department to intensify operations against the sale of illicit liquor in the district. �As illicit liquor has a huge impact on the society, the Excise department should step up its operations,� they said.
