Draft NRC to be out in Oct

NEW DELHI, July 19 - The Centre on Tuesday said that the draft National Register of Citizens (NRC) is likely to be published by October and final NRC by January, 2017.

Considering the pace at which the work is progressing and subject to completion of document verification, family linkage database, the draft NRC is likely to be published in October and the final NRC three months after later.

As part of the NRC upgrade process, at least 97 per cent of the field verification of the application forms have been completed, Minister of State for Home Affairs Kiren Rijiju said in a Lok Sabha reply.

The Office of the State Coordinator, NRC, Assam has received a total of 68,08,232 application forms, both offline and online with 6.73 crore documents. The process of verification, which comprises office verification and field verification, is now in progress, he said.

The field verification of 66.27 lakh application forms, which accounts for 97 per cent, is complete and office verification of 4.31 crore documents, accounting for 64.04 per cent, has been completed.

The Supreme Court has stipulated that the update work should be completed as per modalities and the draft and final NRC be published within the shortest possible time.
