Dr PC Chaudhury to be honoured by Sahitya Sabha

GAURIPUR, June 2 � Dr Paramananda Rajbangshi, Chief Secretary of Asam Sahitya Sabha, in a press release handed over to the media persons at Dhubri Sahitya Sabha Bhawan recently stated that this year the highest honour, Sadashya Mahaiyan of the Asam Sahitya Sabha would be conferred on renowned scholar, anthropologist and historian Dr Pratap Chandra Choudhury in a special convocation to be held during the month of August.

It may be mentioned here that Dr Choudhury, aged about 93 years, had a brilliant career and got first class first position in History from Benaras Hindu University in 1944 and had his Ph.D from London University in 1951. He had authored a number of books including The History of Civilisation of the people of Assam upto twelfth Century. He was also the Director of the History and Antiquarian Depth. of Assam and served there for long 18 years.

Dr Rajbangshi further stated that the Sahitya Sabha has also proposed to organise workshops during the summer vacation for school children in order to increase their knowledge about Assamese language and culture at Jorhat, Dibrugarh, Diphu, Guwahati and Dhubri in collaboration with the respective branches of the Sabha.

He also informed that the Sabha would publish a register of names of the life-members of the Sabha and issue identity cards to them so that they could avail of the facilities provided to the senior citizens of the State.

In reply to some questions raised by scribes, the stated that the Sabha would go ahead with all its schemes and invited constructive criticism from all sections of people of the State irrespective of caste and creed. He also informed that this year, the Bishnu Rabha Divas would be celebrated in Kolkata with a two-day programme on June 20 and 21 in collaboration with the Tripura and West Bengal governments.

The Sabha will also try to recover the property of Bholanath Baruah from Kolkata, he stated, adding that he wanted to revive the age-old bond of the people of Assam and West Bengal.

He also appealed to the scribes to maintain the ethical values of journalism in reporting sensational news so that the image of Asam Sahitya Sabha was never marred.

The president of Dhubri Zila Sabha G Ahmed requested the media persons to help increase the member of the life-members of the Sabha. The meet ended with a vote of thanks from the chair.
