Dr Mahanta Kalita�s death condoled

GUWAHATI, April 17 - The Assam unit of the All India People�s Science Network (AIPSN) has mourned the death of Dr Mahanta Kumar Kalita, a pioneer of the people�s science movement in the north-eastern region of India, as a great loss to the people�s science movement. Dr Kalita died on April 13, 2020 at his Beltola residence here at the age of 76 due to prolonged illness.

The State unit of the AIPSN has stated in a condolence message here that Dr Kalita, who was the president of the AIPSN Assam State Coordination Committee, played a vital role in establishing the Institute of Advanced Studies in Science and Technology (IASST) as an institution of higher studies in science and technology. The IASST has now been able to emerge as one of the leading institutes of higher studies in science and technology.

A former general secretary of the Assam Science Society, Dr Kalita had led the Bharat Jana Bigyan Jatha in the State in 1987 as the State secretary. He also penned a number of books and articles to popularise science, said the AIPSN State unit.

The AIPSN State unit comprises Assam Science Society, Gyan Bigyan Samiti Assam, Ellora Vigyan Mancha and CRU (NER).
