Dr Kalam arrives on 2-day Arunachal visit

ITANAGAR, Aug 3 � Former President of India, Dr APJ Abdul Kalam arrived in the State capital here this afternoon on a two-day visit. This is the second visit of Dr Kalam, who had earlier visited Arunachal Pradesh in 2002.

Arunachal Chief Minister Dorjee Khandu along with Rural Development and Panchayati Raj Minister Takar Marde, Chief Secretary Tabom Bam and a host of senior government officials received the �Missile Man� at the Raj Bhawan helipad ground.

A group of enthusiastic schoolchildren from Vivekananda Kendra Vidyalaya, Itanagar was also seen meeting the country�s first children�s President and taking autographs from him. Governor Gen (Retd) JJ Singh, who landed here from a New Delhi trip a few minutes ahead of Dr Kalam�s arrival, also greeted the former President at the Raj Bhawan.

The world renowned nuclear scientist interacted with a select group of about 300 school students from the Capital Complex schools at the Darbar Hall of Raj Bhawan later in the evening, encouraging his audience to speak their mind. Dr Kalam feels that a child�s mind is in its purest form, and we should let it blossom to the fullest. During the interactive session, the schoolchildren were accompanied by their teacher escorts.

The Former President would attend the second convocation of North Eastern Regional Institute of Science and Technology (NERIST), Nirjuli near here tomorrow as the chief guest. He would also give away the degrees, medals and diplomas to the successful students in different fields of science, technology and management.

Among others, State Governor and the president of NERIST Society, JJ Singh and the Director of IIT Guwahati, Prof Gautam Baruah, who is also Chairman of NERIST Board of Management, would also share the dais with the former President during the convocation.

The first convocation of the Institute was attended by President Pratibha Devisingh Patil on April 1 last year. The premier institute has already completed 25 years last year.
