GUWAHATI, Nov 11 � The trust � Bhupen Hazarika Nyas � which has been formed to preserve the creations and the memory of Dr Bhupen Hazarika, should immediately convene a meeting of the distinguished people, the State Governments and the institutions like the universities of the NE region to devise the right approach. This is the opinion expressed by renowned filmmaker Abdul Majid while talking to The Assam Tribune on the issue.
For, he said, Dr Hazarika belonged to the entire NE region. He was not confined to Assam alone.
Celebrated poet Nilamoni Phukan said though most of his songs are already published, some others need to be collected along with his other writings. His writings in the monthly journal Amar Pratinidhi and other journals and newspapers are to be collected and edited meticulously keeping intact the original text and mentioning correctly the time of their publication and the sources from where they are collected.
His personal letters, his writings in English, his interviews, his photographs�particularly those with the leading personalities and connected with the socio-political and cultural events should also be collected and published in a selective manner.
The same should be done in the case of the notations of his songs, his paintings and drawings, his available travelogues. The lyrics of other litterateurs he had set to tunes should also be mentioned in such compilations.
Proper efforts should be made to correctly project his multi-faceted personality while preserving his works for the future generations, said the noted poet.
Distinguished scholar on Sankaradeva studies Prof Keshavananda Deva Goswami called for steps to set up two institutions of deemed university status, for studies and research, pursue and practice of the elements of folk and traditional art and cultures of all the ethnic groups and communities of the region.
He also called for All India fellowships and scholarships of the Union Department of Culture in the name of Dr Hazarika for study and research on folk and traditional art and cultures of the country.
Prof Deva Goswami said the State Government should take urgent initiatives to impress upon the Union Government, particularly the Department of Culture as well as the University Grants Commission (UGC), to set up deemed university type institutions. While one of them is to cover the areas on the north bank of the Brahmaputra, the other is to cover the areas on the south bank of the mighty river, he said.
