GUWAHATI, Nov 14 - Dr Bhupen Hazarika Foundation (BHF) organised an interactive panel discussion and lecture on the creations of Dr Bhupen Hazarika at Kumar Bhaskar Natya Mandir in association with Kamrup Natya Samity, Pragjyotish Communication and Axom Sahitya Samaj recently.
Dr Irom Gambhir Singh, Professor of English, Manipur University who has been working on different cultures of the North East, was the resource person on the occasion. He said that Dr Hazarika�s creations worked towards establishing peace and harmony amongst different tribes and communities of the North East, and that his ideals were quite relevant in countering violence in today's strife-torn world.
Many of Dr Hazarika�s immortal creations have already been translated to Manipuri and Tai languages by Dr Singh.
Singer Dolly Ghosh inaugurated the event by rendering a song on Dr Bhupen Hazarika, written by Pranabendu Debnath and set to tune by Sourav Mahanta. Social worker Dhiren Baruah, noted writer and advocate Dilip Kumar Hazarika and Biraj Sarma made short speeches on the life and achievements of Dr Hazarika.
Children from different schools of the city also participated in the event.
Educationist Dr Amarjyoti Choudhury in his address used the metaphor of the seven basic notes of Hindustani classical music to present an enlightening synopsis on �the various sources of Dr Bhupen Hazarika�s musical creations.� He mentioned that Dr Hazarika�s creations were greatly influenced by the three pillars of Assamese literature and culture, i.e. Rupkonwar Jyotiprasad Agarwalla, Kalaguru Bishnu Prasad Rabha and Natasurjya Phani Sarma.
�The higher education received by Dr Hazarika at Banaras Hindu University and Columbia University enriched his intellectual capabilities. His creations were also influenced by his association with the ITPA and the City of Joy, Kolkata. He was able to project and place himself at a unique platform as one of the best contemporary artistes by virtue of his being born at Sadiya, his interactions with different communities not only from the North East, but also across the globe and his association with people like Paul Robson,� he observed.
Naturalist and writer Dr Haricharan Das emphasised on the importance of Dr Hazarika�s post- doctoral thesis at Columbia University �The role of audio-visual media in adult education in India� in the present context and its relevance.
Earlier, Dipanka Hazarika, general secretary of BHF spoke about the aims and objectives of Dr Bhupen Hazarika Foundation. Former MP Indramoni Bora, economist Dr Jayanta Madhav, agricultural scientist Dr Mokhada Prasad Borthakur, Dr Roman Sarma, Dr Ankuran Dutta, Santanu Roy Choudhury, Utpal Bezbarua, Rupjyoti Hazarika, Aksad Ali Mir, Manju Devi Pegu, Nilima Das, Putli Kayastha, Runumi Lahkar, Dr Sangita Choudhury and Kiran Baruah spoke on the occasion.
