Dr Bhupen Hazarika�s birthday celebrated

GUWAHATI, Sept 8 � The birthday of legendary artiste Dr Bhupen Hazarika was celebrated by various socio-cultural organizations across the State today.

In Guwahati too, like previous years, various organizations, including the All Assam Students� Union (AASU), celebrated the occasion in a befitting manner.

The AASU, to celebrate the day, organized a special evening �Uddipana� at Dighalipukhuripar, where people, young and old alike, turned up in large numbers.

A cake was jointly cut by Gyanshree Pathak, daughter of Rupkonwar Jyotiprasad Agarwala and Prithviraj Rabha, son of Kalaguru Bishnu Prasad Rabha near the life-size statue of the Dada Saheb Phalke Award winner at Dighalipukhuripar. Nripen Chandra Hazarika, brother of Dr Hazarika, was also present on the occasion.

A cultural evening was also organized to celebrate the occasion where singers from almost all the colleges of the State performed.

Speaking on the occasion, AASU adviser Dr Samujjal Bhattacharya made a strong appeal to the Centre to confer Dr Hazarika with Bharat Ratna. Dr Bhattacharya, along with all those present on the occasion, also wished a quick recovery of the maestro, who is presently undergoing treatment in a Mumbai hospital.

President of the students� body Sankar Prasad Rai while lauding the unmatchable contributions of Dr Hazarika, said, �Dr Hazarika�s creations have been a guiding force for the Assamese society, besides being a source of inspiration. We need to carry on his legacy and infuse it in the minds of new generation.�

Besides, organizations like Pragati Silpi Sangha, Rotary Club of Gauhati West and the Guwahati Blind School also organized functions to celebrate the occasion. An all-faith prayer was also organized at Dr Hazarika�s Nizarapar residence.
