BARPETA, March 1 � The entire environment in Barpeta is agog with joy and merriment as the Doul festival is approaching fast. Not only the Barpeta Satra campus and its adjoining area but the entire town is busy with the preparation of their one of the most revered festival.
Boys and girls, youth and old, poor and rich have started full swing preparation for the festival. Tunes of Holi songs have subdued all other sounds in the town. People specially the young ones are rehearsing time and again so that their performance excel whether in competitions or in exhibitions during the festival. Artisans are busy for preparation of colour with cent per cent local technology.
The festival this year will be a five-day long affair commencing on March 4 next. Bahnutshava or Gondh will be observed on that day. Idols of Doul Gobinda or Lord Krishna and Kalia Gosai will be brought out of the Manikut or Bhajghar of the Satra in the evening on that day. A meji built on the forecourt of the Satra will be burnt and the idols will be moved around the meji. It will be followed by the erection of the idols in the Stup of the Math the forecourt of the temple.
Exhibition of fireworks is an indispensable part of the Bahnutsava. As the religious process ends thousands of indigenous fireworks manufactured by the adept hands of the local artisans will illuminate the sky here which will add glory to the full moon day sky.
The next three days will be observed as Bhar Doul. Devotees will offer prayer to their beloved God Lord Krishna during these three days. People from different parts of the State and even from outside the State will throng the Barpeta Satra campus on the days of Doul. All the rituals of Satra will be performed during these days. Besides there will be special performance on Satriya culture.
Suweri will be celebrated on March 8 the last day of the festival. Idols of Lord Krishna and Kalia Gosai will be brought out of the Doul Temple and will be kept in a chariot and will be taken to Kalbari Satra about one and half kilometer away from Barpeta Satra. The idols will return in the evening. The Lord will be debarred from entering the Manikut by the disciples of Lakshmi. However, the Lord side will succeed in removing the barriers and will enter the temple. As soon as the idols are erected on their original places of the temple the rituals related with the Doul comes to an end.
The festival of colour will be observed with similar routine and traditions in Patbaushi, Ganakkuchi and Sundaridia Satra. Doul Yatra is one such festival where people of Barpeta whole heartedly devote their time and energy to celebrate it.
Meanwhile, the Barpeta Satra management committee has made elaborate arrangement to celebrate the five-day long festival. Visitors coming from far flung places will be provided food from the Satra. Special measures have been adopted to maintain discipline and peace during the festival days.
