Dora Beel fest from today

GUWAHATI, Jan 24 - The three-day-long Dora Beel festival gets under way from tomorrow on the banks of a beel at Rampur village under Palasbari LAC. The event will be kicked off with the plantation of a tree sapling by Ashwani Kumar Mazumdar, president of Dakshin Kamrup Janasratha Suraksha Samiti. This was stated in a press release.

The highlight of the event will be a series of seminars to be held on each of the events. How production of indigenous fish species can be increased by restoring the glorious past of the wetland will be discussed in the seminar on the inaugural day. Anuj Kalita, professor of Dakshin Kamrup College, Mirza will conduct the seminar. Debojit Naffa, advisor of Chandubi Festival will attend the occasion.

Dr Abani Kumar Bhagaboti, Professor of Geography, GU will grace the symposium scheduled to be held on January 26. Deliberations will be made on the exploration of scientific ways to enhance fish productivity and aquatic plants in the wetland.

On the concluding day, retired professor Mrigendra Mohan Goswami, GU will deliver a speech on the scientific prospects of tourism potential in Dora Beel. Dr Bhupen Lahon, senior scientist of the National Fisheries Development Board and Dr Birendra Kumar Bhattacharya, Director in charge of Central Inland Fishery Research Institute will deliver speeches at the seminar.

Babul Hazarika and Umesh Kalita, respectively the president and secretary of the Dora Beel Festival Organising Samiti stated the festival has been organised to sensitise the people including the stakeholders about the necessity of preservation of the wetland.

On the inaugural day, Pankaj Lochan Goswami, Zila Parishad member will inaugurate the exhibition cell. A cultural function will also be held.
