SHILLONG, March 12 - Former Chief Minister Donkupar Roy was elected as the Speaker of Meghalaya Assembly through secret ballot.
The election of Speaker was conducted by Protem Speaker, Timothy D Shira of NPP. Roy who was fielded by NPP-led Meghalaya Democratic Alliance Government won by 35 votes.
His opponent, Winnerson D Sangma, who was supported by Opposition Congress, got 20 voters and one vote was found invalid.
Addressing the newly-elected members after assuming the post of Speaker, Roy said, he would ensure that the prestigious post will not be used for toppling the Government and that he would respect both the voices of the ruling and opposition.
Roy said that all his actions would be in accordance with the Constitution of India. �I would act fairly and justly to members of both the ruling and the opposition,� the Speaker said.
Recalling his first entry into Meghlaya Assembly, Roy said, he was first elected as an Independent from Shella Assembly constituency in 1988 and was a victim of the Speaker�s action. Roy is the president of UDP, one of the coalition partners of MDA Government.
