Dona Planet sealed for violating norms

By Staff reporter

GUWAHATI, April 24 For defying the prescribed parking norms, multistoried shopping mall Dona Planet on the GS Road was today sealed by the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC).

Due to lack of action on the notice served to the mall authorities one-and-a-half months back, a team comprising of GMC commissioner Puru Gupta, associate planner Deepak Bezbarua, collector DK Misra, and circle officers of Dispur Revenue Circle Tankeswar Das and Siddhartha Goswami sealed the building.

According to the building permission given by the GMDA, the basement area of the building was meant for parking 68 vehicles. But during several rounds of inspection, it was found that the basement area was too dark and the approach way was also very steep. Moreover, the space was used as office and staffroom, which was not permissible, GMC commissioner Puru Gupta said.

Most of the vehicles coming to the malls were parked on the roadsides creating traffic problem, he added.

The mall authorities have been asked to take the corrective measures and the basement area of the building has not been sealed for removing the unauthorised structures and carrying out necessary demolitions in order to make the basement area fit for parking vehicles, associate planner Deepak Bezbarua added.

The corporation would intensify its drive against the buildings violating the building construction rules. Action would be taken against the buildings, which are not constructed according to the approved maps, or the building not having fire safety and earthquake resistance systems in place. A new law of building construction would also be enacted in this regard.
