By Staff correspondent

SILCHAR, June 14 - OPD services at the Silchar Medical College and Hospital (SMCH) were affected for two hours on Friday as doctors took out a protest rally to condemn the mob attack on resident doctors at the NRS Medical College in Kolkata.

Hundreds of doctors under the banner of Post-Graduate Association, Junior Doctors Association and Students Union shouted slogans condemning the mob assault on the resident doctors in which one doctor sustained a fracture in his skull and is under medical observation.

We are appalled by the insensitive stance of the West Bengal government over the plight of the doctors. The SMCH doctors thoroughly condemn the incident in Kolkata and express solidarity with our injured colleagues. We dedicate our lives towards serving patients but often colleagues from our fraternity are harassed and even mercilessly beaten. We do not deserve such treatment and hence demand tight security at work, the protesting doctors said.

Silchar Medical College Principal Dr Babul Kumar Bezbaruah said that they were following the move by the Indian Medical Association and the doctors were protesting for a genuine cause. The doctors do need adequate security at the workplace. The incident at Kolkata is certainly condemnable, he said.

Dr Tinku Moni Borah, a postgraduate student and president of the hospitals PG Doctors Association, said that OPD services resumed at noon.

Meanwhile, senior doctors of the city including Dr M Masoom, the district president of the Indian Medical Association, Cachar district branch; Dr Sharmistha Bhattacharjee, Dr Giridhari Kar, Dr Aniruddha Biswas and others also sat in protest outside the office of the Cachar Deputy Commissioner and demanded implementation of the national law against violence in hospitals across the country. The doctors said they would send a memorandum to the Prime Minister and the Home Minister echoing the need for seven years of rigorous punishment to whosoever commits violence inside hospitals.

Our Bongaigaon Correspondent adds: The Bongaigaon unit of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) staged a protest against violence on doctors in front of the Deputy Commissioners office on Friday.
