AGARTALA, May 22 - A doctor was caught red-handed by Tripura Health Minister Sudip Roy Barman while he was conducting an abortion at a government hospital in Birchandra Manu area of South Tripura.
The minister, accompanied by Secretary of Health Samarjit Bhowmik and Director of Health Services Dr JK Debbarma, suddenly arrived at Birchandra Manu PHC this morning. He immediately went to the operation theatre and spotted one Dr Ajay Biwas performing abortion on a girl. Shocked by the act, the minister scolded the doctor, who is also the medical officer in charge of the Birchandra Manu PHC.
An FIR has been lodged against the doctor for conducting an abortion secretly at a government hospital, which is gross misconduct by a government doctor. Police have started an investigation into the case.
It has been alleged that the doctor, who was a student of the Agartala Government Medical College, had been carrying out abortions illegally at the government hospital for the past seven years.
