DIBRUGARH, April 19 - Dibrugarh Municipal Board (DMB) chairman Anuradha Dey was removed from her post on Tuesday after 15 BJP municipal ward commissioners expressed no-confidence in her leadership.
The Dibrugarh district administration on Tuesday asked DMB vice chairman Jugananda Sensowa to be the officiating chairman till April 24, when a new chairman will be selected.
The no-confidence motion by the BJP councillors was a culmination of the distinct divide among the civic representatives, with the Dey faction having allegiance to local MLA Prasanta Phukan. Both Phukan and Dey have of late gone out of public favour, as the two were seen to be taking no interest in the development of the city after the BJP came to power in Dispur.
While there is hectic lobbying for the new chairmans post, the two leading contenders among women councillors are Shoma Chakraborty and Priyanka Saikia Borthakur. An old BJP activist, Sudama Choubey, is also said to be keen to be the next chairman of the municipal body here. He does not belong to the Prasanta Phukan faction, and often announces that he is with Sarbananda Sonowal. May be his loyalty to the Chief Minister will be counted this time.
