Divide between the rich and poor has increased

By The Assam Tribune

AGARTALA, Oct 3 CPI-M Politburo member Brinda Karat has charged the Centre with formulating economic policies which had allegedly widened the divide between poor and rich.

In the last ten years, the poor became poorer and rich became richer due to the liberal economic policy of the UPA Government. The women are the worst affected as they suffer from malnutrition and anaemia, she said.

While addressing Ganatantrik Nari Samiti, the women wing of the CPI-M, here yesterday she alleged that the government had forgotten its pre-poll promise of providing food security.

Despite having food, more than six crore tonnes were rotting in godowns as they have refused to distribute food through fair price shops to all sections of people in the country, Karat said.

The government is protecting the interests of the Khaas Aadmi instead of the aam aadmi, she alleged adding food inflation rose to 16 per cent and prices of essential commodities exceeded all previous records.

The Maoists, in league with the Trinamool Congress, have hatched a conspiracy to topple the Left Front Government in West Bengal because it is protecting the interests of the poor people and the UPA Government is giving them silent support, the CPI-M leader alleged.

In the implementation of Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee scheme and other welfare schemes for the marginalised sections, Tripura has set an example in the country, she added. PTI
