By STAFF Correspondent

DIBRUGARH, Oct 2 - The district administration has suggested the Indian Railways to close down the historic Dibrugarh Town Railway Station and for complete diversion of trains to the new Dibrugarh Railway Station at Banipur for the greater convenience of the people.

Deputy Commissioner Pallav Gopal Jha stated in his proposal that the railway tracks running through the town and the roads built adjacent to them cause constant traffic jams, accidents and inconvenience to commuters, students, patients and the general public.

It may be mentioned here that the demand for diversion of trains from Dibrugarh Town Railway Station to the new railway station is a long pending demand of the people here. Several organisations had earlier submitted memorandums to the authorities concerned, seeking complete diversion of trains to the new railway station at Banipur.

Considering the heritage value of the Dibrugarh Town Railway Station set up in 1882, organisations here had also suggested converting it into a railway museum cum heritage complex.

Local MLA Prasanta Phukan too had requested the Deputy Commissioner to pursue the matter with the higher authorities.
