Dist admin plan to preserve ecosystem

GUWAHATI, June 5 - The World Environment Day was marked in Kamrup Metro district with tree plantation programmes being organised at different places in the city as well as in the nearby panchayat areas.

On the occasion, Dr M Angamuthu, Deputy Commissioner of Kamrup Metro, said that the district administration has decided on a plan of action for the next one year as part of its efforts to preserve the biodiversity and ecosystem in the city.

He said it would include continuous survey and removal of encroachments close to the primary water channels like the Bharalu river and Deepor Beel, preservation of wetlands and water-bodies within the city, identification of open spaces for re-greening projects, preservation and conservation of the city�s biodiversity and survey of riverfront and clearing of encroachments along such places.

Besides, steps will also be initiated for formation of Swachh Bharat Clubs in residential areas and schools and colleges and encouragement for tree plantation among various sections of people.

�Efforts will also be made to involve various NGOs and youth organisations for capacity building and awareness generation regarding issues of environment and ecology,� he added.

It is noteworthy that the district administration will tomorrow announce the �City Animal� for Guwahati based on recent online voting.
