Dissidents meet meaningless: party sources

By STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI, May 21 Congress party sources today refused to attach much importance to Tuesdays meeting of the partys dissident legislators describing it as virtually a meaningless exercise. Those who organised the meeting were unaware of the Congress tradition, said the party sources.

The tradition of the party is such that when such a meeting is held, a central observer duly appointed by the party high command, needs to be present there to observe the proceedings of the meeting minutely. But at Tuesdays meeting, there was no such central observer present.

Moreover, the party workers at the grassroot level are not going to take such dissident activities easily at this hour when the party is passing through a critical phase after an electoral debacle throughout the country, said the sources.

The dissidents demand for a change in the leadership smacks of some personal agenda of some of their leaders, which is unlikely to be tolerated by the party high command, sources said.
